Ex-council’s move blocked

Masvingo Bureau
Government has blocked a bid by the previous MDC-T dominated Masvingo city council to give former mayor Alderman Femius Chakabuda a residential stand and the mayoral Mercedes Benz as part of his exit package after serving as a ceremonial mayor for five years.
Before its ouster from office in the July 31 harmonised elections, the MDC-T-dominated council had passed a resolution giving Alderman Chakabuda the golden handshake in the form of the properties that he used for official functions.

Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Dr Ignatius Chombo quashed the move.
Newly-elected MDC-T Masvingo ceremonial mayor Councillor Hubert Fidze last week said council’s decision to reward Alderman Chakabuda had been rebuffed.

Mayor Fidze said his council, which comprises six MDC-T councillors and four from Zanu-PF was not behind the move to reward Alderman Chakabuda.
