THE former Mayor of Marandellas, Mr Tavengwa Murondo, has appeared in the town’s magistrates’ court in connection with allegations that he drove while under the influence of drink and refused a police order to give a blood sample.
Mr Murondo was remanded out of custody by magistrate Mr James Redfern, last Wednesday, for trial on the charges under the Road Traffic Act on August 19.
Mr Murondo resigned from the town council the week before last with his deputy, Mr Albert Mavudzi.
Prosecutor Mr Knox Munjoma said it would be alleged that the former mayor was seen at about 9.30pm by two policemen as he drove away from the Mushandira Pamwe Hotel in Dombotombo.
He refused to stop when the police car pulled up alongside him and only did so when police drove in front of him, Mr Munjoma said.
Mr Murondo did not acknowledge one of the policemen when told his tail lights were not working and when he drove off he was followed to his house in Dombotoombo.
A senior policeman came to the residence and tried to get the councillor to agree to a blood test, said the prosecutor, but Mr Murondo persistently refused.
He will be defended by Mr Honour Mkushi of Sawyer and Mkushi.
LESSONS FOR TODAY
- No-one is above the law. Everyone, regardless of their position in society, should submit themselves before the law. The former mayor got in trouble because he did not want to submit to the police.
- Police officers should be respected and obeyed especially when they are on duty because their role is to maintain law and order. Resisting lawful orders only makes their job difficulty.
