Former Utakataka Express lead and rhythm guitarist and sungura musician Matthew Perego is on cloud nine after being appointed a regional brand ambassador by a transport company, Tems Logistics.
Perego, a singer, guitarist, choreographer and social commentator, was appointed recently after the company saw how his music was making waves in South Africa, especially being played on public transport.
In an interview with The Herald Arts, Perego said he was happy with how the corporate world was supporting upcoming artistes.
“They bought a phone, shoes and clothing for our Strategic Band,” he said. “We promise to remain disciplined and release hits once we get over our biggest challenge which is the public addressing system.”
Perego is working on releasing an album titled “Dzidza Makasa”.
“The album will have tracks such as ‘Dzidza Makasa’, ‘Tonyo’, ‘Nhamo Iyo’, ‘Jojola,’ ‘Vana Mwari veVanhu,’ and is inspired by societal settings,” he said.
“It is a silencer missile on the way for Zimbabwean sungura music sector, mark my words, I would say people will learn much soon, as God doesn’t fail.”
One of the founding directors of Tems Logistics Company, Edward Chikumbu, said they were happy to be working with Perego.
“Mathew Perego, a multi-talented upcoming youthful sungura artiste, is now Tems Logistics brand ambassador,” he said.
“We have endorsed Perego as our business ambassador after having been attracted to his charming music as he used to play with Tongai Moyo, later with Peter Moyo, heir to Tongai Moyo’s Utakataka Express Band.
“We kept believing in him when he went on to play with the likes of Romeo Gasa and also following his songs. He helped many artistes like First Farai and others. We helped him acquire instruments, pay studio fees and with cash when he started Strategic Band with which he recorded his first album, “Dhiri Rakanaka” in year 2022.
“He has released tracks like ‘Dhiri Rakanaka,”Mwari Muchengeti,’ ‘Dhiya’, Warwadziwa Neyi’, ‘Maudio’ . There are two tracks that he did thanking us, Tems Logistics Company, namely ‘Tem Inokuremera,’ ‘Zvodzo reDenga’.”
Chikumbu said they were going to help Perego record a video of his album.
