VP Mujuru visited the Zambian Embassy in Harare last week where she wrote her condolence message after a book was opened at the em-bassy. Mourners led by Zambian president Mr Rupiah Banda attended the funeral.
Chiluba died at his home last weekend and was buried alongside ex-president, Levy Mwanawasa at a ce-metery reserved for former presidents. Mr Mwanawasa who was Chiluba’s successor died in 2008. Thousands of people watched Chiluba’s funeral on State television and giant screens across the country including in villages. Other leaders in attendance included Democratic Republic of Congo president Joseph Kabila and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.
Mr Chiluba was the second president of Zambia after Dr Kenneth Kaunda. He came to power in 1991 and his reign lasted until 2001. Zambians described Mr Chiluba, who is credited with ushering in multi-party democracy in Zambia, as a great man.
“All the people, the young and old, have said that he was a great man,” AFP quoted President Banda as telling about 4 000 mourners at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka.
“The visitors that have come have described the president in the exact fashion that Zambians described, that he was a great man.” Mr Chiluba died at his home on June 18, after suffering a seizure. He had been battling acute heart and kidney problems.
