Examination cheats in court

AN attempt by a Mutare teacher and two students to help a friend pass his O-Level examinations backfired after the deal was exposed.

Richard Gurudza, Wellington Noruwana and Enock Zamani have since appeared in court for contravening Section 35 (a) of the Zimsec Act. They appeared before Mutare magistrate, Mrs Annie Ndiraya, last Thursday.

Gurudza is a teacher at Vision Academy whereas Noruwana and Zamani are students at the same institution.

It was the State’s case led by Mr Brian Goto that the three accused on November 13 at Zamba Primary School, Sakubva, acted in common purpose by stealing a Zimbabwe School Examination Council Geography Paper 2 Ordinary Level examination paper and prepared an answer script.

“On the day the paper was stolen it was handed over to Noruwana so that he would give Zamani who was writing a Geography Paper 2 at Zamba Primary School. On the day of the examination, Noruwana alerted Zamani who was in the examination room by calling him on his mobile. The latter responded by asking the invigilator to accompany him to the toilet.

“It was in the toilet that Zamani was given the answer script by Noruwana as per their arrangement. I

n the examination room an invigilator noticed that he had an answer script that was different from those provided in the examination room. When he was interviewed, he disclosed what had happened,” said Mr Goto.

A report was made to the police by Acquillinah Chinhanga, a teacher at Zamba Primary School.

The three accused denied all the charges and the matter was remanded to January 6, 2014 for trial. The three accused were asked to pay $20 bail each.
