“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.” (Deuteronomy 30:19)
In this scripture, God is calling upon heaven and earth to testify against us as He set life and death before us.
Life and death is something that we can choose.
If we live, it is because we chose to live, and again if we die, it is as a result of our choices.
If life and death cannot be chosen, then there is no point in having such a scripture in the Bible.
God cannot claim He has laid before us life and death and that we have chosen death if we do not have the power to choose it.
God is not a man that He can lie. If He tells us He has placed life and death before us and He advises us to choose life, we have enough intelligence to know these are things we can choose.
We choose to live and we choose to die.
When you have life and death placed before you, when you have an opportunity to either live or die and if God tells you to choose, the question is how do you choose?
“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil”(Hebrews 5:14).
In this scripture, God is encouraging us to receive strong teachings and doctrines, but this is only for those who are mature. If you are still young in the spirit, you cannot receive this strong meat because it can choke you.
Once you have developed in the spirit, you have to go after strong teachings and heavy material that can help you discern between good and evil.
The scripture is talking about having our senses exercised, it is something that has to be done.
You have to exercise your senses to discern between good and bad.
You cannot just wake up one morning and find yourself choosing good over evil, you have to exercise your senses every day.
Discern the difference in things, in places, in opportunities and in people.
When you interact with people exercise your senses, learn to pick good from what people are saying.
Learn to discern the evil that proceed from people when you interact with them.
If God is to present life and death before you and ask you to choose, how then are you going to choose life if you do not have senses that are properly exercised?
You will not know the difference between life and death until you have your senses exercised.
There is a very big difference between life and death, good and evil, but unless you have your conscience exercised, you cannot see the difference.
You will end up picking death and you will be surprised why you are dying yet it is because of the choices you make.
Many times we make these choices before exercising our senses.
The senses you have need to be practised, you have to learn to discern.
Even when somebody is talking to you through the phone, try by all means to detect lies as the person is talking to you.
Do not take everything you hear because people specialise in lies.
Whatever source of information you have, understand that there is only one book that tells the truth under the sun and that is the Bible.
As you read any book, exercise your senses to discern good and evil.
If you do not exercise your senses, one day you are honestly going to find yourself choosing death instead of life.
You wonder why things are going wrong in your life and yet that is what you have chosen.
A sense that is never exercised should never choose, and also by not choosing you have chosen something.
The best you can do is to exercise your senses.
Most people do not have senses that are exercised, but you have to train your senses every day.
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee…” (Hosea 4:6).
God is saying that His people are perishing because of lack of knowledge and, if you see a scripture like that you think it is because there is no knowledge available.
People are perishing, not because they lack knowledge, but they have rejected it.
People are rejecting the knowledge that gives them life and that preserves them.
“But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (2 Timothy 1:10).
Jesus brought life and immortality through the gospel, which means these two are handed over to people via the gospel.
It is not just any gospel but the gospel about life and immortality.
The main reason why people are dying is because the preachers have avoided the gospel about immortality and life.
Jesus brought life and immortality by the preaching of the gospel, when we preach it then it happens.
The reason why Christians are dying is because that is what we spend most of our time talking about.
We have preached death more than life.
We have all agreed as Christians, including most theologians, that eventually we have to die.
We have talked about it, wrote books about it and wrote songs about dying.
Death has been heralded more than life and people have discussed death more than they have discussed life.
People have actually prepared themselves for death and yet not many are really ready to live.
Death is happening as we are opening up our mouths and talking about it like what the Book of Proverbs says.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof”(Proverbs 18:21).
The words you speak have power that causes you to either live or die; people are dying because that is what we talk about.
“A wholesome tongue is a tree of life . . .” (Proverbs 15:4).
If you want to have access to the tree of life, it is in your tongue.
Your tongue is like a tree which produces fruits.
If you speak death, that is what you eat, if you speak life that is what you eat and if you speak sickness and trouble that is what you get.
