EVERY greening effort must be planned.
Gone are the days when one would haphazardly plant anything.
Take your time to choose a garden theme that suits your style.
There are many to choose from, which I may not be able to exhaust here. For example, a wildlife-friendly garden, oriental or Japanese garden, Mediterranean garden, edible garden, sensory garden and herbal garden. Let us see what some of these gardens entail.
A wildlife-friendly garden, as the name suggests, is one that will naturally attract wildlife or birds.
The layout and shrubbery also attract animals.
A Japanese or oriental garden features cultural aspects from the East, which might include water, rocks, racked stones or carefully pruned plants like the Bonsai.
It evokes a feeling of tranquillity and harmony.
A Mediterranean garden is a direct result and reflection of the climate found in southern Europe. It is marked
by the use of drought-resistant plants, fragrant plants and materials like wrought iron, stone and terracotta.
Common plants in such a garden can be rosemary, lavender, olive trees and grape vines.
An edible garden focuses on food plants like vegetables, fruits and herbs.
Plants of different textures can again be grouped to make a sensory garden.
Additionally, a herbal garden features only plants with medicinal benefits.
Further, an indigenous plant garden is one that has to be encouraged as it helps with conservation of the plant heritage.
It also promotes a balanced ecosystem, preserving the natural species while aiding them to thrive and prevent their extinction.
In our greening efforts, we cannot forget this truth.
