THE Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is expected to meet parents over concerns related to compulsory extra lessons at Houghton Park Primary School.

In a letter dated June 2, 2026, signed by the school headmaster, Gift Muzenda, and addressed to parents, the school announced that the meeting will be held on Tuesday, at the school premises.

The letter is inviting parents to what the school authorities are terming an Emergency General Meeting (EGM), which is scheduled to start at 9 am.

The letter says the meeting will be attended by officials from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

“The Ministry officials will convene an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) on Tuesday 9 June 2026 at Houghton Park Primary School at 9am,” reads the letter.

“Agenda: Extra lessons concerns.

“This meeting will be convened by Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education officials. Please be there on time.”

However, while Houghton Park Primary School has been under the spotlight, it has emerged that the same challenges are being faced by many other schools.

Some parents are unhappy that compulsory extra lessons have been introduced even for Early Childhood Development (ECD) learners.

They are questioning the necessity of the programme and the amounts of money being charged per child.

The disgruntled parents say extra lessons, at many schools across the country, have effectively been turned into a “fundraising initiative” instead of something meant to support learners in their studies.

At Houghton Park Primary School, relations between some parents and teachers have become tense with the two parties clashing in a WhatsApp group.

After H-Metro published the story, more parents, including those from missionary and government schools, came forward saying they were facing similar challenges.
