Eye-gouging robber in court

A suspected robber, who attacked a 26-year-old university graduate and permanently damaged his eyes while robbing him of $10, appeared in court yesterday.

Panganayi Mutinhira of Number 1610 St Mary’s, Chitungwiza, pleaded guilty to plain robbery charges.

He appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe and was remanded in custody to today.

Prosecutor Ms Sharon Mashavira told the court that on July 3, at the corner of Harare Drive and Kilwinning, in Hatfield, Mutinhira teamed up with his accomplice Edmore Chihwai who is still at large.

The pair waylaid Mayibongwe Madisa who is a holder of a Bachelor of Entrepreneurship Development degree.

They robbed him of his wallet containing $10 and assaulted him with a sharp object in his eyes.

Due to injuries sustained during the assault, Madisa is now permanently blind.

His eyes were badly damaged and doctors had to remove them.

Mutinhira was arrested at the crime scene trying to rob police officers who were in a private vehicle.

He was found in possession of a catapult and an okapi knife.
