Fake bank note trio nabbed over $2,100

THREE men have been arrested in Gokwe for possessing counterfeit money amounting to $ 2,150 in fake $100 and $50 bank notes.

National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said an Eco-cash agent screamed for help after one of the suspects attempted to use two fake $50 notes in a transaction.

Members of the public apprehended the three men and when police searched their vehicle, they recovered more counterfeit notes.

“The ZRP would like to confirm the arrest of three male adults who were found in possession of fake US notes amounting to $2,150 in Gokwe on August 21, 2015. On the said date at around 7PM, the three suspects, Elisha Matongo, 26, Tawanda Makwechemu, 40, and Brighton Maningi, 30, were driving a Toyota Noah Registration numbers ADK 2900 blue in colour,” said Snr Asst Comm Charamba.

“They arrived at a business Centre in Gokwe. Elisha disembarked from the vehicle and approached an Eco-cash agent where he purported to cash in two $100-00 notes. The agent realised that the money was fake and screamed for help.”

She said alert members of the public then surrounded the suspects’ vehicle, before handing them over to the police.

“The accused persons were searched and more fake notes were recovered as follows; 1x $100 note serial number HE 38223466A; 2x $100 notes serial number KB 60523888A; 1x $100 note serial number LD15799476D; 6x $100 notes serial number LD 15799475D; 9x $100 notes serial number LC 78045824A; 3x $50 notes serial number MB 22251546A; 2x $50 notes serial number ML 04381949 A,” Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.

She urged people to scrutinise notes before accepting them and said anyone seen or suspected to be using fake notes should be reported to the nearest police station or to the National Complaints Desk on telephone numbers (04) 703 631.
