Fake doctor convicted of four counts … to learn fate today

A man who masqueraded as a medical doctor, Prosper Vanhuvaone, has been found guilty on multiple charges in Bulawayo.
Vanhuvaone was convicted of three counts of fraud and one count of impersonation.

The verdict was delivered yesterday, and all eyes are now on Bulawayo magistrate Mrs Eva Matura, who will deliver the sentence today.

In mitigation, Vanhuvaone told the court that he would reform and become a law-abiding citizen and that he would also complete his studies in the medical field.
He said he had taken a shortcut because of the pressure he was feeling from his peers who had graduated.

Vanhuvaone said he is a credible candidate for a non-custodial sentence as he is a family man.
“I have a car and US$1 800 in my savings. I also have a house in the suburbs. I also run a private company,” he said.

In aggravation, the prosecution, led by Mr Samuel Mpofu, said a custodial sentence would be preferred as Vanhuvaone is a pathological fraudster.
“This case is of national interest. In his previous conviction, he went by the name Prosper Mpofu, and now he goes by Prosper Vanhuvaone. Giving him a non-custodial sentence will endanger the lives of members of the public. More so, people have lost confidence in the health system at Mpilo Hospital because of his conduct,” said Mr Mpofu.

The court case has drawn significant public interest, highlighting the dangers of unqualified individuals posing as medical professionals.
Vanhuvaone’s actions put numerous individuals at risk, and the sentencing will be a key moment for justice and public safety.
