Fake driver’s licence lands man in court

yesterday appeared in court facing fraud charges.
The accidents allegedly cost his employer more than US$18 000.
Gwatimba Makuwere (45) was not asked to plead when he appeared before magistrate Mr Kudakwashe Jarabhini.
Mr Jarabhini remanded Makuwere out of custody to tomorrow on US$50 bail.
He was ordered to continue residing at his given address, report every Friday to the police and not to interfere with State witnesses.
Makuwere was also ordered to surrender his passport.
Prosecutor Ms Memory Chidavaenzi alleged that on February 9, 2009, Makuwere sought employment at Covenenoun Enterprises which was looking for applicants with a clean class 4 driver’s licence.
It is the State’s case that Makuwere got the job after using a fake licence and the company entrusted him to use a company vehicle.
He was on a US$450 monthly salary.
Makuwere, it is alleged, was subsequently involved in a series of road accidents and each time management investigated the cause they would realise he was a negligent driver.
Management undertook further investigations after the accidents.
The Central Vehicle Registration confirmed that Makuwere did not have a valid driver’s licence leading to his arrest.
As a result, Makuwere prejudiced Covenoun Enterprises US$8 500 through salaries.
The cost of the damaged vehicles was US$11 135.
