A NOTORIOUS five-men armed robbery gang that terrorised Murewa for years while masquerading as military personnel has been sentenced to a combined 81 years in prison.
The five went on a violent crime spree, raiding homes and businesses.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the convicted gangsters are Charles Munyaradzi Dokotera (42), Mayor Sibanda (34), Bothwell Kamwendo (39), Donald Travolta Matunhu (28) and Colonel Madzima (24). They were found guilty on nine counts of armed robbery.
The gang operated with chilling military precision, using shotguns, pistols, revolvers and even shambocks to intimidate and assault terrified victims.
Their reign of terror came to an abrupt end on 22 April 2025 after a dramatic chase by angry residents. Their getaway vehicle suffered a tyre puncture, allowing the brave mob to corner them before police moved in.
Investigations later led to the recovery of a huge cache of stolen property and weapons hidden near the Shavanhohwe River, sealing their fate in court.
Although the combined sentence stood at 81 years, the court suspended part of the punishment, leaving the gang to serve an effective 44 years behind bars.
