The family assaulted the complainant, Mr David Banga, using clenched fists and iron bars. They went on to administer electric shocks with cables connected to a welding machine.
Amos (44), Joyce (41), Daisy (23), Denis Alubembe and Joyce Chasarira are appearing before Regional magistrate Mr Munamato Mutevedzi. They are currently on US$50 bail each coupled with reporting conditions.
In their defence outline, the five said their television set was stolen at their house and the first person they saw was the complainant and they thought he was the culprit.
They submitted that they sought to get a confession from him and that Amos and one Obert Mula had slightly burnt him with a candle. They alleged that the complainant was further assaulted by a mob.
The trial continues on May 13.
Prosecutor Ms Rufaro Mhandu alleges that on August 27 last year the complainant was walking past the accused person’s place in Budiriro 5B when the accused persons confronted him. They allegedly accused him of breaking into their house and stealing some property.
The family, it is alleged, took the complainant into their yard and started punching and striking him with iron bars as well as kicking him.
The State further alleges that they went on to burn the complainant with candles and administer electric shock with cables which were connected to a welding machine.
The complainant lost consciousness in the process.
They allegedly stole his cellphone, T-shirt and shoes all valued at US$87.
The complainant sustained serious injuries and only regained consciousness upon arrival at a police station.
Mr Banga was medically examined and the medical affidavit will be produced in court as an exhibit. The family was arrested when they went to report a case of theft.
