Family, friends pay homage to Dr Mzee

maudmuzendaA MEMORIAL service was held Friday to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of the late Vice President Simon Vengai Muzenda.
Dr Muzenda, who was regarded as the “Soul of the Nation”, died on September 20 2003. Ten years later, members of his family, relatives and friends gathered at the family home in Lewisam in Chisipite, Harare, to pay homage to the man who contributed immensely to the liberation of the country.

Dr Muzenda’s widow, Mrs Maud Muzenda, and his daughter Senator Tsitsi Muzenda, said they derived comfort in knowing that Dr Muzenda’s contributions are acknowledged, adding that the revolutionary party’s landslide victory is a demonstration of the people’s determination to defend the country’s independence.

The chairman of the Dr Simon Muzenda Foundation, Dr Simbi Mubako, a former Cabinet minister and ambassador, described Dr Muzenda as an icon of the liberation struggle who would always be remembered whenever the history of Zimbabwe is narrated.
Father Elias Gweme of Saint Gerard’s Parish presided over the mass and described the late Dr Muzenda as an instrument that was used by God to deliver Zimbabweans from colonial bondage.

Dr Muzenda was a selfless cadre and a great mentor who dedicated the greater part of his life to the birth of a liberated Zimbabwe.
Dr Muzenda, who was affectionately known as Dr Mzee, was born on October 28 1922 in the Gutu district of what was then the Victoria now Masvingo province. His death at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals followed a prolonged battle with a kidney ailment. – Herald/ZBCNews.
