A BULAWAYO family cheated death after a homeless man allegedly poisoned them with a sugar like substance which was used to prepare tea for the family.
After drinking the tea laced with the substance supplied by Albert Ncube, Moreen Ncube, her husband and grandchild were rushed to hospital suffering from severe stomach aches, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Ncube appeared before the courts on Wednesday facing attempted murder charges.
Provincial magistrate Sibongile Msipa remanded him in custody to October 21.
The state led by Dennmore Kasenza alleges that sometime during the month of September, Albert, who lives on the streets around the Bulawayo Market, was approached by Ncube while he was carrying some yellowish substance suspected to be sugar.
The woman, a vendor at Bulawayo Market, was used to seeing Ncube near her vending bay.
She asked Albert to confirm if the substance was sugar and he said it was.
He then gave her the substance.
On October 2, the woman made tea and gave it to her husband and grandchild using Ncube’s sugar like substance. Soon after they had stomach aches and started vomiting. An ambulance was called and they were rushed to hospital where they were treated and discharged.
