THE country’s top bikers and drivers will this afternoon set Bulawayo’s Victoria Falls Road Circuit alight when they take to the track in the last race of the year.
The Toyota Castrol Three Hour Endurance Race has attracted about 60 riders and drivers, with half of them coming from Harare, South Africa and Botswana.
Focus in this year’s edition, which is running under the theme “Women in motorsport”, will be on female participants.
Bianca Schultz from Bulawayo, who will ride a Honda CBR600, is expected to face stiff competition from Harare’s Tiffany Fisher, who will also be using a similar bike.
These two competitors have improved steadily in recent years, with Tiffany winning the Megelli 250 cc Zimbabwe National Championship earlier this year.
In car racing, Lola Berrie will share a drive with her father Stuart Young and brother Levi in a newly turbo charged Sports 2,000. They should brace for stiff competition from Byron Norman and his son, who will be driving a VW Golf and Mitsubishi Evo respectively.
Other females to watch are Christy Laing, who is also sharing a drive with her father Mike, in a Honda CRX and Lorraine Randall, who will be competing with her husband Gavin in a Super 7 powered by a Yamaha R1 engine.
The female drivers will have an opportunity to compete with defending champions Darren Winterboer, winner in the super fast category where he drove a BMW. Runners up John Amm and Eric Salomon will be hoping to give Winterboer a good run for his money.
Other Three Hour Endurance Race contenders will include Harare’s Gary Kirk, who will be sharing a drive with Gary Bluett in a Lotus Super 7.
Bulawayo’s Denzil Bhana will also make an appearance in his reliable Ford Escort alongside Darren Pragji in his faithful orange Datsun 1200, while Ian Howden and Richard Robinson will be in their turbo charged Toyota.
Leonora Young, spokesperson for the Bulawayo Motoring Club, said spectators that will participate in their morning competitions will receive prizes.
“To make this event exciting, we will give away prizes courtesy of our sponsors Toyota Zimbabwe, Castrol hp lubes, Barons Motor Spares, ZB Bank, Fence Africa, Road Angels and Tren Tyre. Part of the proceeds generated from this event will be donated to charity. We’re really looking forward to a bigger and better race,” said Young.
