BULAWAYO music fans this week find themselves in a tricky dilemma which promises to test their decision making skills with three potentially mouth-watering gigs slated for Friday.Superstar Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi is at the Amphitheatre, Peter Moyo at Manor Hotel and Jah Prayzah at Club Royal.
Fans will literally find out the meaning of the phrase “You can’t burn your candle at both ends” as they have to settle for only one of the enticing acts which all start at 8pm.
A tough choice would have to be made in deciding whose act to fork out their money for. As Jah Prayzah’s Tsviriyo song suggests, some will be dancing to Samanyanga’s music while some will be at Peter Moyo’s show and others at his.
Sharing the stage with Tuku will be Sulumani Chimbetu while his brother Tryson will be at Manor Hotel with Peter Moyo. This is another potential catch 22 scenario which adds competition to the set up, throwing dendera fanatics into a difficult situation.
In this age of advanced social media where fans can be in constant real-time communication, all the musicians involved will have to be at their best to avoid fans running to other gigs.
In separate interviews, show promoters admitted the booking of the shows was causing them a headache. However, they were quick to point out that the development was good for Bulawayo music fans.
Byron Lussate of Lussate promotions, handling Tuku’s show, said they were not worried about the other gigs which could take place at the same time with their show.
“We are concentrating on our show and running around to make sure we cover all the logistics before the show. It’s a good thing that Bulawayo will host this triple piece because it is Christmas time and people should be happy,” he said.
Club Royal owner Tapiwa Gandiwa concurred with Lussate’s statement, when he said the lined up shows were good for Bulawayo fun lovers since everyone could have plenty to choose from.
“If you are a Peter Moyo fan, Jah Prayzah or Tuku fan, then you will not have trouble deciding. Only neutrals will suffer but in a good way.
“This is the best scenario heading into Christmas, it will set the tone for good celebrations heading into the New Year,” he said.
The Tuku show dubbed “Bulawayo Shutdown,” will feature Sulumani Chimbetu, Iyasa and Family Voices while Jah Prayzah will share the stage with local group Ziyawa.
