NAIROBI. – The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) said yesterday that it is developing a standardised tool to collect data on conflicts and climate change in sub-Saharan Africa.
Luca Russo, a senior economist at FAO, said that sub-Saharan Africa has been heavily affected by the dual challenges of climate change and conflicts, which have severely impacted food security and undermined the livelihoods of millions around the region.
“In response to these crises, floods, droughts and the spread of both new and recurring crop and livestock diseases, have further destabilised fragile societies, deepening food and nutrition insecurity,” Russo told a meeting in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, that was attended by agricultural experts from 12 countries in Africa.
The UN official noted that the tool will help identify effective practices and foster a collaborative environment for sharing experiences and knowledge on resilience strategies.
Russo added that with the use of the tool, most interventions, analyses and data collections are done at a farmer household level. – Xinhua.
