Liberation war hero status has been conferred on Cde David “Demo Tichatonga” Farawo, who died on Wednesday aged 78.

Announcing President Mnangagwa’s conferral yesterday Zanu PF Secretary General Cde Obert Mpofu said: “His Excellency, the President and First Secretary of Zanu PF, Cde Dr ED Mnangagwa has conferred liberation war hero status on Cde David Farawo who died on April 26, 2023 and will be buried at the provincial heroes acre in Mutare.

“The family can be contacted through our Manicaland provincial office. I shall be grateful if you would make the usual arrangements for his burial and payment of benefits to the family. He is from Manicaland province.”

Son of the late liberation war hero and Zimbabwe Parks And Wildlife Management Authority spokesperson, Mr Tinashe Farawo, described his father as a “hard worker.”

“He was a perfectionist,” he said. “He really wanted the best out of us and would always push us. He wanted us to be educated because he always said he failed to get an opportunity to go to school, that is why he invested more in ensuring that we are educated as he believed in fighting ignorance and poverty.”

Mr Farawo said as a family, they were happy with the hero status accorded by the Zanu PF Government led by President Mnangagwa.

“He truly deserved it because in the 1970s he took his employer’s bus and drove it to join the war,” he said. “Along the way, he would pick up other recruits so that people could go and train to fight for independence.

“It is the golden generation which sacrificed their lives, their youthful years to fight for independence. Some of them unfortunately failed to make it back home. Others did and my father was among the fortunate ones who managed to come back and work for the development of this country.”

Cde Farawo is survived by 16 children and many grandchildren.
