TWO farm workers have been arrested after they allegedly teamed up and beat up a man to death accusing him of stealing from one of them.

Stephen Dube (35) and Lewis Sibanda (32) who are employed at Spring Farm in Gwanda took turns to assault Brian Moyo (24). They then detained him overnight.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident.

He said Dube found the now deceased in the process of stealing his belongings in his room and alerted his workmate.

“I can confirm that we recorded a murder case which occurred at Spring Farm in Gwanda. The now deceased Brian Moyo broke into the room of one of the accused persons Stephen Dube on Saturday at around 6PM where he took a wallet which contained R3 000, a cell phone and some groceries,” she said.

“Dube arrived and found Moyo in the process of committing the offence and they started fighting. Dube called out for his workmate who arrived and they ganged up on Moyo. They tied his legs and hands with a rope. They took turns to assault him with a sjambok and they detained him overnight where they further assaulted him.”

Insp Mangena said the following morning at around 4AM the pair force-marched Moyo to his homestead where they further assaulted him with a log and sjambok in the presence of his wife and left him lying on the ground unconscious.

Insp Mangena said Moyo’s wife sought help from neighbours who ferried him to the nearest clinic where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The matter was reported to the police and Moyo’s body was ferried to Gwanda Provincial Hospital Mortuary.

She urged members of the public to desist from taking the law into their own hands.

“As police we continue to urge people to desist from taking the law into their own hands. If they apprehend a suspect, they should hand them over to the police and allow the law to take its course.

“In this case these men were supposed to apprehend the suspect and surrender him to the police upon catching him while committing the offence. By taking the law into their hands people will just be committing an offence,” she said. -@DubeMatutu
