THE Environmental Management Agency (EMA) Education and Publicity Officer for Matabeleland North District, Mr Graham Ndou, has reaffirmed farmers’ responsibility to prevent and manage veld fires, particularly during the current land preparation season.
Speaking at the ongoing Good Food and Seed Festival at Tada Hall, Tsholotsho Centre, Mr Ndou urged farmers to reduce the burning of waste and instead embrace recycling as a way of protecting the environment while generating income from waste materials.
Mr Ndou warned that, under the statutory instrument provisions of the Government of Zimbabwe, anyone found causing veld fires could face prosecution, with penalties of up to six months in prison or a fine of up to US$5,000.
He encouraged farmers and communities to exercise caution during land preparation and adopt safer waste management practices to reduce the risk of veld fires.
