Farmers urged to up potato production

LOCAL SEED Company Edda Seeds is working on improving its capacity utilisation to ensure that potato production increases.
The company’s consultant agronomist Lovemore Nyakazela said the company was operating at 40 percent capacity.
Nyakazela said the increased potato production was in response to the shortages of potatoes being experienced in the country.
“Following a ban on agricultural products imports, there is now a shortage of potatoes in the country and local farmers should fill the gap,” said Nyakazela

He said the shortage provides an opportunity for farmers to increrase production as there is now a ready market for their potatoes.
Nyakazela said they were happy with the results of their potatoes seed variety.

“When we introduced the seed variety, most farmers were not sure if it would yield good results but we are happy to say that it has yielded excellent results,” he said.
Nyakazela said most commercial farmers now preferred the seed as it is disease resistant.

He said the seed can be grown throughout the year which means the farmer can harvest potatoes at least three times a year.
