In South Africa, the escalation of xenophobic attacks has taken a distressing turn, with reports emerging of targeted victimisation of South African nationals who are known to harbour and support foreigners, particularly Zimbabweans.
The recent surge in xenophobic violence has raised concerns about the safety and security of individuals involved in assisting and accommodating foreign nationals within the country.
In the latest tragic incident, Wonder Mabaso also known as Sibelebele, a South African national, fell victim to this alarming trend. Mabaso was fatally shot in Johannesburg while driving his friend, Themba Mfeka’s vehicle.
Shockingly, investigations by the South African Police Service (SAPS) revealed that the perpetrators had mistaken Mabaso for Mfeka. This distressing turn of events underscores the grave consequences of the escalating xenophobic tensions within the country.
“Before this tragic incident, Themba Mfeka had encountered hostility from the xenophobic group, Operation Dudula, in Durban. Mfeka had been accused by the group of renting his property to Zimbabweans, leading to a violent confrontation where he was attacked and shot. Surviving the ordeal, Mfeka sought refuge in Johannesburg, only to witness the fatal attack on his friend, Wonder Mabaso,” said an SAPS spokesperson.
SAPS officials have expressed growing concern over the surge in cases where South Africans are targeting and attacking their fellow citizens for providing support to foreigners. This worrying trend has raised apprehensions about the heightened levels of violence and the safety of individuals involved in assisting and accommodating foreign nationals within the country.
The SAPS officials advised concerned citizens to prioritise their safety and security while remaining vigilant in their communities.
“In light of the increased cases of South Africans targeting and attacking fellow citizens for harbouring foreigners, SAPS emphasizes the importance of reporting any suspicious activities or threats to the authorities promptly.
“Citizens are encouraged to engage with their local police stations, community service centers, or district/commander’s offices to report any concerns or incidents related to xenophobic violence,” reads a statement from the police.
The distressing events unfolding in South Africa highlight the urgent need for measures to address and mitigate the escalating xenophobic tensions, ensuring the safety and security of all individuals, regardless of their nationality or background.
