FC Hunters assistant coach Arthur Gorejena has hailed the Munhumutapa Cup as a vital platform for talent identification as his side prepares for a second-round clash against surprise packages Norton Big Boys Club this weekend.
Gorejena said the tournament has created opportunities for players from across the country, particularly those from remote areas, to showcase their abilities while also allowing Premier Soccer League clubs to expose emerging talent.
The Harare side head into the tie buoyed by last weekend’s one nil win away to Triangle United, a result Gorejena believes lifted the team’s confidence ahead of the knock-out encounter.
“We’ve been training quite well since our game against Triangle.
“We managed to salvage a points there, which was important to us. I think that gives us the boost going into the Munhumutapa Cup over the weekend,” said Gorejena.
Despite Norton Big Boys competing in Division Two, Gorejena insisted his charges would not underestimate their opponents.
“We respect them as a football club.
“They are playing in Division Two, which is also a competitive league in its own right, but we take this game very seriously.
“We have started our preparations with high-intensity training, and we are determined to progress to the next round,” he said.
Gorejena revealed that the club intends to continue promoting home-grown talent, with several youngsters expected to feature prominently in the competition.
“Elder Chirima, Tadiwanshe Huni, Mafios Chihweta, and Tadiwa Chakuchichi have done quite well, and we expect them to play a part starting this weekend,” he said.
Gorejena praised ZIFA for introducing the Munhumutapa Cup, saying the tournament provides clubs with additional competitive matches while creating pathways for young players to develop.
