FC Platinum are through to the quarter-finals of the Chibuku Super Cup after beating struggling Dongo Sawmills in a match played at Mandava Stadium yesterday.

The platinum miners got their important goals from Brian Muzondiwa in the 35th minute and Tarisai Rukanda (75th minute) to keep their hopes of defending the $75 000 Cup, alive.

Dongo never looked a threat from the onset and resorted to delaying tactics as if content with a penalty shoot out but were no match for a Kugona Kunenge Kudada outfit that played passing football games and were duly rewarded in the 35th minute.

Allan Gahadzikwa, who controlled the midfield with aplomb, sent a defence splitting pass to Muzondiwa, whose first time shot went past the legs of goalkeeper Forward Pfumojena. It was Muzondiwa’s fifth goal of the season and his first in a cup competition.

Before the goal Gahadzikwa had seen his point blank shot outside the box tipped over the bar by the Rusape-based goalkeeper in the 27th minute.

Tarisai Rukanda put the scores beyond the reach of the visitors when he reacted to a cross by Ian “Gumbura” Nekati in the 75th minute.

The winners of the Chibuku Super Cup will receive $75 000 with losers pocketing $50 000. The last four will get $25 000 with quarter-finalists taking $20 000 and those losing in the first round settling for $15 000

Dongo Sawmills and Buffaloes will receive $15 000 each for bowing out early.
