“They approached him when it became apparent that it was a huge mistake to fire Gumbo which they did on impulse but Kaindu was not moved by the lucrative offer and even informed his employers at Highlanders,” said a source.
Kaindu is said to have been very open with the Highlanders executive and told them not to panic as he was still committed to the Bulawayo giants despite the fact that the club is yet to fullfil some of its contractual obligations with the Zambian.
When quizzed over their bid for a sensational scoop, FC Platinum secretary Philimon Muwengwa expressed ignorance over the issue.
“I am hearing that for the first time from you. We will review Chikuni’s performance at the end of the season but for now he is in charge,” said Muwengwa.
Since taking over, Chikuni, whose coaching history was not known until Gumbo took him as his right hand man to Malawi, Botswana and now Zimbabwe, has won five games and lost an equal number while drawing two, effectively ruling them out of the championship title.
Modest Kaindu, whose team’s 23-match unbeaten streak in the league came to an abrupt end last Saturday at the hands of Monomotapa, rubbished the reports.
He has also been linked with a move to Jomo Cosmos.
“I really don’t know where you are getting that information from but you are not the first reporter to ask me about that. I was asked that same question after our 2-1 win over Motor Action and my answer was the same, I am not going anywhere,” said Kaindu.
He also revealed that during the same interview after the Motor Action game, he denied that he has been in touch with Jomo Cosmos owner and South African football legend Jomo Sono over a possible move across the Limpopo.
Kaindu said he has been and will still remain committed to Highlanders.
“I am still the Highlanders Football Club coach,” he said.
The Zambian joined Highlanders at the beginning of the year after signing a two-year contract with the then Themba Ndlela led executive and has so far surpassed expectations with a record breaking 23-league matches and one cup game unbeaten run.
The only other Zimbabwean club to come close to that was Zimbabwe Saints although 10 of those matches were cup games in 1988.
