The Zimbabwe Defence Forces Women Association (ZDFWA) on Wednesday handed over a new state-of-the-art housing block for female soldiers at 1 Air Defence Regiment near Kwekwe, a move hailed as a step towards women’s empowerment and inclusivity.
ZDFWA is an association for all women within the Zimbabwe Defence Forces. The association chairperson, Mrs Sithandelile Matatu, who is the wife of the commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, General Emmanuel Matatu, handed over the block, saying this was a shot in the arm towards women’s development.
The 20-room block worth thousands of dollars was fully funded by the Zimbabwe National Army ZDFWA chapter, which is chaired by Mrs Jessica Tapfumaneyi, who is the Wife of commander ZNA, Lieutenant General Asher Water Tapfumaneyi.
Commanding officer of the unit, Lieutenant Colonel Cliff Mugari, said that, in line with the national gender policy and the Zimbabwe National Army gender-neutral recruitment policy, the number of female soldiers has increased over the years hence, the gift was a shot in the arm towards women’s empowerment.
