FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, has accepted an invitation to attend the COSAFA General Assembly in Johannesburg, South Africa, tomorrow.
The COSAFA AGM comes at a crucial time, when African football leaders have been busy trying to find who can be the best man, to take over, as CAF boss, next month.
Infantino was invited to the regional indaba by COSAFA president, Philip Chiyangwa.
And, yesterday, the FIFA boss confirmed he would attend.
“I would like to thank you for your kind invitation to the COSAFA General Assembly, which will take place on 21 February 2021 at the Sandton Sun Hotel in Johannesburg,’’ wrote Infantino.
“I am herewith very pleased to confirm my attendance to this important event of the Southern Africa football community.
“Our arrival in Johannesburg is scheduled on Sunday, 21 February 2021, in the early morning and our departure the same day, late in the night.
“My office will be in contact with yours regarding the logistical organisation (delegation and travel details) for our stay in Johannesburg.
“I truly hope this 2021 General Assembly will be successful in every respect and look forward to meeting you next Sunday in Johannesburg.’’
AT their last meeting of their executive committee, last month, the COSAFA leadership unanimously resolved that Patrice Motsepe would be the only candidate, to be supported by their 14 members, in the battle for the CAF presidency.
“The COSAFA executive reiterated a decision taken in 2017 that the Zone should always support one of its own, in this case Dr Motsepe,’’ the regional body said in a statement.
“In 2017, COSAFA was the first bloc to endorse eventual winner Ahmad Ahmad from Madagascar.
“The executive has now resolved that Member Associates will back Dr Motsepe for the CAF presidency.’’
Chiyangwa, who was instrumental in helping Ahmad beat Issa Hayatou, in 2017, said they expect other regional bodies to also back Motsepe.
“We are confident that once we take a unanimous decision to back one of our own, other members who want real change in CAF will join the winning party,’’ he said.
“In Dr Motsepe we have a candidate who will usher in a new era for African football.’’
