A SOBUKHAZI High School teacher who assaulted a colleague for allegedly picking up his $5 as he was paying back the money he owed her was yesterday arraigned before the Bulawayo Magistrates Court facing assault charges.

Lucky Nkomo, 55, pleaded guilty when he appeared before provincial Magistrate Sibongile Msipa.

He was remanded out of custody to 10 November.

According to the State, Nkomo owed his workmate, Sikhathazile Muzhamba, $50 but in court he claimed that he owed her $20.

Nkomo said when he was giving Muzhamba $20, he dropped a $5 note which the female teacher picked up and refused to hand back to him.

He added that a misunderstanding arose and Muzhamba grabbed him by his belt, which angered him and he assaulted her.

“Your Honour I called her out of the school so I could clear my debt and handed her a $20 note. As I gave her the money, some money fell from my pocket and she picked up $5 and refused to give me, though I asked her to do so,” Nkomo said.

Magistrate Msipa bemoaned the immature behaviour displayed by the two teachers as they were role models. “I am actually shocked that we are dealing with two teachers whom we expect to be exemplary to our children. This is embarrassing,” she said.

The State led by Charles Danda alleges that on Tuesday, Nkomo called Muzhamba out of the school as he wanted to give her $50 that he owed her.

Nkomo allegedly gave the woman $20 and an argument arose as the money was not enough. The argument continued until Nkomo assaulted Muzhamba with open fists several times all over her face.

He continued assaulting her until she fell to the ground.

Muzhamba was rescued by Duduzile Mathe who took her back into the school but Nkomo followed and assaulted her again.

She sought medical help at Mpilo Central Hospital.
