TEARS flowed uncontrollably in Hlatshwayo, Insiza District, yesterday as family members, friends and hundreds of mourners gathered to bid a final farewell to Mbalenhle “Mbali” Sibanda, whose untimely passing has left a big void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
She died on Thursday evening last week in a road traffic accident which claimed the lives of Highlanders chairman Kenneth Mhlophe, his deputy Fiso Siziba and board member responsible for finances, Nkani Khoza.
The atmosphere was heavy with grief as hymns echoed across the cemetery and sobs broke the silence while Mbali was laid to rest in an emotional ceremony attended by relatives, neighbours, friends and members of the wider community, all united in celebrating a life that ended far too soon.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mbali’s elder brother, Mongameli Sibanda, fought back tears as he thanked everyone who stood with the family during one of the darkest moments of their lives.
“We are deeply humbled by the overwhelming love, prayers and support that we have received from our family members, friends, neighbours and everyone who walked this painful journey with us.
Your presence, messages of comfort and acts of kindness have given us strength during this difficult period. As a family, we sincerely thank each and every one of you. May God richly bless you,” said Mongameli.
He acknowledged that while the pain of losing Mbali remained unbearable, the compassion shown by people from all walks of life had reminded the family that they were not alone in their grief.
Mbali’s grandfather, Norman Ncube, also expressed profound gratitude to everyone who attended the befitting send-off, saying the family’s burden had been eased by the overwhelming show of love and solidarity.
“On behalf of our family, we sincerely thank everyone who came to mourn with us and gave Mbali such a dignified farewell. Your prayers, comforting words and support have carried us through this painful period. We may never be able to repay your kindness, but we pray that God richly blesses each one of you,” said Ncube.
Overcome with emotion, Ncube described Mbali’s passing as a devastating loss that had shaken the entire family.
“It is difficult to find the right words because our hearts are shattered. We never imagined we would be standing here saying goodbye to our beloved Mbali. She was a beautiful soul who brought joy, laughter and love wherever she went. Today we bury her body, but her smile, kindness and spirit will remain with us forever. We will miss her every single day,” he said.
Another uncle, Denzel Mabhula, also struggled to contain his emotions as he paid tribute to his beloved niece.
“No parent, uncle or family member is ever prepared for this kind of pain. Mbali was not just our niece; she was our daughter and our friend.
“Her passing has left a wound that words cannot heal.
“We take comfort in the love that has surrounded our family over the past few days and we ask everyone to continue praying for us as we learn to live with this painful loss,” said Mabhula.
The burial service was marked by emotional tributes, heartfelt prayers and moving hymns as mourners reflected on Mbali’s warmth, kindness and the precious memories she leaves behind.
Many openly wept as her coffin was lowered into the grave, embracing one another while others stood in silent prayer, unable to hide the pain etched across their faces. — @FungaiMuderere
