Two Beitbridge men have been fined US$450 or six months imprisonment each for helping four Malawians cross illegally into South Africa across the Limpopo River. Washington Cheya (21) and Tymon Nyandoro (age not given) were arrested 5km east of the Old Limpopo River late last year.
Both pleaded guilty to contravening the Immigration Act and were convicted by Magistrate Ms Gwineth Drawo. On November 26 last year, the two, who earn a living by moving illegal migrants between Zimbabwe and South Africa, spotted four Malawians loitering around Beitbridge Border Post.
They were then hired for R800 by a Malawian transporter to get Muza Limam, Amidu Jafara, Raydan Mususa and Abhudhi Hamizi to South Africa. The four had been denied entry into South AFrica and their passports were also endorsed.
Cheya and Nyandoro ran out of luck when they were intercepted by police detectives on routine patrol along the Limpopo River.
The four Malawians told the police that they had paid R800 to the two to get them across the river.
