Fire at HSC won’t affect games

ZIMBABWE Cricket have said the fire incident that occurred at Harare Sports Club on Tuesday night will not affect the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier games.

The blaze, which occurred on the peripheries of the stadium, near the “Castle Corner” area, was quickly contained by the firefighters before spreading to the main structures. ZC yesterday said no-one was injured and no property was destroyed.

The venue had hosted Zimbabwe and Netherlands earlier in the day, with the hosts romping to a six-wicket win in the high-scoring match.

West Indies and Nepal are set to play at Harare Sports Club today.

“Zimbabwe Cricket can confirm a fire occurred at Harare Sports Club behind the south-west grandstand at the venue last night (Tuesday).

“A prompt response from the City of Harare Fire Brigade ensured the flames were quickly doused and there was no damage caused to any of the structures at the ground.  “Tomorrow’s (today) ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023 fixture at Harare Sports Club will not be affected and will proceed as scheduled,” said the ZC statement.

The Windies will be seeking a second win in as many matches against Nepal, who picked up a first win of their campaign against the USA in their last encounter.

A win for the Caribbean’s would put them in a commanding position, while Nepal can give themselves a real opportunity of reaching the Super Six with an upset at the Harare Sports Club.

The Netherlands will also be back in action as they take on the USA in a match neither team can afford to lose across town at Takashinga Sports Club.

USA lost to Nepal last time out, two days after an opening defeat to the West Indies, meaning this clash with the Dutch is huge for their hopes of reaching the Super Six.

The Netherlands batted well against Zimbabwe but could not back that up with the ball in their opening fixture, but a win against the USA would get them back on track.
