A fire reduced to ashes dormitories of Forms 1 and 2 students at Churchill Boys High School in Harare yesterday, leaving learners and authorities distraught.

The fire was caused by a suspected gas leak or an electrical fault.

Students lost their valuables among them trunks, uniforms, sleeping beds and blankets.

Churchill headmaster Mr Aquanose Mavhunga said the fire started around 3 pm.

“Three dormitories were burnt to ashes. Yes, we informed the fire brigade and they managed to extinguish the fire after 30 minutes,” he said.

He added that they are yet to ascertain the total value of the destroyed property.

A form 6 student, Nathan Moyo, who witnessed the incident said the fire was started by a leaking gas tank at Winston Dormitory which houses form 1 and2 students.

“We managed to rescue some of the students who were trapped in their dormitory. Some lost their goods and a few managed to collect their valuables. We are happy there were no casualties,” he said.

One of the parents who visited the school soon after the inferno said her child lost almost everything.

“I have to buy everything for my child. He lost almost everything,” she said.
