FIRING BLANKS

LONDON. – Unai Emery watched his Aston Villa side torpedo the title charge of his former club Arsenal with two late strikes in a 2-0 win at the Emirates last night.

Earlier Jurgen Klopp saw his hopes of a historic quadruple blown to pieces in the space of six days in 2022 after a 0-1 loss to Crystal Palace at Anfield.

And now Liverpool’s treble bid looks to have fallen apart in less than four days.

A 3-0 quarter-final first leg loss to Atalanta on Thursday means that barring a miracle, Liverpool will not be featuring in the Europa League final in Dublin next month.

And now, a 14th minute winner from Eberechi Eze which handed Palace a stunning win and will have been greeted with cheers from Manchester City and Arsenal fans.

Liverpool, unbeaten at home in the league coming into the game, have been kings of the comeback this season but not here against a Palace team who put in a proper shift.

At the Emirates, Emery, sacked by the Gunners just 18 months after he had succeeded Arsene Wenger as manager, has masterminded a league double over Arsenal, which may ultimately cost them the Premier League title.

The Gunners blew their chance to replace Manchester City at top of the table as Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins fired Villa into a win which boosts their own hopes of Champions League qualification.
