In a bold, trend-setting move set to redefine youth leadership development in Zimbabwe, First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa has launched the Youth Vanguard Movement at the University of Zimbabwe.
The pioneering national initiative is designed to produce a new calibre of young leaders equipped to drive the country’s development agenda.
The launch marked the birth of a structured national platform that draws youths from all 10 provinces and diverse sectors, creating a unified pipeline for leadership grooming, innovation and national service anchored on heritage-based education.
Unlike conventional youth programmes, the Youth Vanguard Movement combines mentorship, leadership simulations, community engagement and project implementation, giving participants hands-on exposure and practical tools to lead with purpose, discipline and integrity.
The initiative also directly tackles challenges facing young people, including limited access to opportunities, exposure and support systems, by offering a clear pathway for empowerment and participation in national development.
Officially launching the movement, Dr Mnangagwa described it as a deliberate and historic investment in Zimbabwe’s future leadership.
“This programme is a national platform that recognises that leadership is not an accident. Leadership must be nurtured, mentored, tested and guided by norms and values rooted in our culture and tradition. The launch of the Youth Vanguard Movement is a call to action for our young people to rise above limitation, fear and insecurity, and to embrace responsibility in shaping the future of our nation,” she said.

The First Lady said the movement would provide structured training and exposure to ensure young people are not only academically equipped, but also grounded in the values and discipline necessary to lead effectively.
Running over three months, the programme will take participants through intensive leadership development processes that blend learning with real-life execution.
Dr Mnangagwa emphasised the importance of action-driven leadership, urging youths to become solution-providers and development champions in their communities.
“We do not want young people who only speak, but those who act and deliver results. Not those who simply attend meetings, but initiators of development who carry responsibility and the will to serve others. Through structured mentorship and leadership exposure, participants will gain not only knowledge, but also the wisdom and guidance necessary to lead with integrity and purpose,” she added.
Dr Mnangagwa said the movement’s success would be judged not by numbers, but by the tangible impact participants create and the influence they spread.
“Beyond the numbers, the true measure of success will be the ripple effect of graduates who inspire others, mentor their peers and drive innovation and accountability wherever they go. In this way, each participant becomes part of a collective transformation of our nation’s governance, economy and social development,” she said.

University of Zimbabwe Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Mapfumo welcomed the initiative, describing it as a transformative national programme aligned with the country’s heritage-based education thrust and vision for innovation-driven development.
“The programme you are launching today demonstrates exceptional innovation and visionary leadership. It speaks to a deep commitment to our culture, our traditions and the empowerment of our people. As a university, we are ready to support this life-changing initiative and to contribute meaningfully towards shaping a generation of leaders who will drive Zimbabwe’s future,” he said.
Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister Tino Machakaire said the initiative had ignited a renewed sense of patriotism and responsibility among young people.
“Your address has not only launched the Youth Vanguard Movement, but has stirred a sense of responsibility, renewed patriotism and a powerful call for us to step forward and do more. To the young people, the future is yours and today you have been entrusted with the responsibility to help shape it. Step forward with courage and the ability to make a difference,” he said.
Beneficiaries welcomed the initiative, saying it provides a rare opportunity to unlock leadership potential and economic empowerment.

A student from Shurugwi, Simbarashe Munyanyiwa, said the programme would mould young leaders capable of competing both locally and internationally.
“This programme seeks to empower the youth by moulding future leaders who can perform not only at the local level but also internationally. We are saying no to drug abuse and unemployment, and yes to productivity, innovation and participation in initiatives that will grow our economy and eradicate poverty,” he said. Florence Ndou, another student from Beitbridge, said the programme offered renewed hope for many graduates who have struggled to access opportunities after completing their studies.
“We are grateful for this initiative by the First Lady because many of us have degrees but were sitting at home without opportunities.
“This programme will equip us with leadership skills and innovative thinking. It also gives young women like me a platform to grow, participate and contribute meaningfully to the development of our country,” she said.
Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs Charles Tawengwa said the movement would strengthen communities and institutions by cultivating capable young leaders while complementing Government’s broader development thrust.
“Today we gather to celebrate a vision that seeks to deliberately nurture and empower a new generation of leaders who will carry forward the torch of Zimbabwe’s development.
“This movement will not only inspire our youth, but also strengthen our communities, institutions and the national fabric as we work together towards inclusive development,” he said.
The Youth Vanguard Movement is expected to produce a critical mass of disciplined, visionary and action-oriented young leaders equipped to drive innovation, strengthen governance structures and contribute meaningfully to Zimbabwe’s socio-economic transformation, setting a new national benchmark for youth leadership development.
