FIRST Lady Dr Grace Mugabe will officially open the 59th edition of the Matabeleland South agricultural show next month.

The exposition, to run from 11 to 13 August under the theme “Sustainable Livelihoods through Transformed Agriculture,” is renowned for showcasing the best cattle in the country.

However, following a ban on cattle movement due to a foot and mouth disease outbreak in Matabeleland South, this year the giant Kalahari red goats are set to be the star attraction.

Goats of this breed can have a live mass of up to 120 kilogrammes.

Mr Mvelo Mthiyane Zondo, the show’s spokesperson yesterday said: “Our mother will grace the show this year and Matabeleland South will have a chance to host her as she will be our guest of honour. It’s a show with a difference and we feel honoured to be graced by the First Lady’s presence in our province.”

He said a briefing will be held at a local hotel’s special enclosure before Dr Mugabe proceeds to the main arena to tour the stands.

“We have the capability to host her. If we managed to host Vice President, Phelekezela Mphoko, there is no doubt that we are more than capable to do the same with the First Lady.

“We urge our people to come in their numbers for the event to be a success,” he said.

Last year VP Mphoko officially opened the 58th edition of the show.

The Department of Veterinary Services only allowed cattle movement from Bulilima, Mangwe, Matobo South and Gwanda South.

Cattle farmers from Insiza, Beitbridge, Umzingwane and Gwanda North did not take part because their areas are worst affected by the foot and mouth disease.
