First Lady’s agro-tourism initiative hailed

FIRST LADY Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa is being widely hailed for her visionary leadership in launching Zimbabwe’s Agro-Tourism initiative, a bold and innovative step aimed at transforming rural livelihoods and promoting sustainable development.

Dr Mnangagwa’s efforts have drawn high praise from the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development which has described the initiative as a milestone in the nation’s journey towards inclusive economic growth.

The launch event, held on May 6 this year, at the homestead of Mrs Chimuti in Buhera District, Manicaland Province, symbolised the First Lady’s deep commitment to grassroots empowerment.

Dr Mnangagwa, who serves as the Patron of both Agric4SHE and Agro-Tourism, has been recognised for placing rural women like Mrs Taranhike Chimuti at the forefront of national development through innovative agricultural tourism models that preserve culture, boost income, and promote sustainability.

Minister Dr Anxious Masuka praised the First Lady for linking agriculture, fisheries, water resource management, and tourism into one dynamic strategy.

“We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Her Excellency the First Lady of Zimbabwe, a fervent advocate for sustainable development and the Patron of both Agric4SHE and Agro-Tourism, for the successful launch of the Agro-Tourism initiative on 6 May 2025 at Mrs Chimuti Homestead, Buhera District, Manicaland province,” the Minister said.

He highlighted agro-tourism’s potential to diversify incomes, raise awareness of rural realities, and foster environmental stewardship.

The Ministry pledged continued support for agro-tourism entrepreneurs, with a commitment to profiling and strengthening local initiatives that reflect Dr Mnangagwa’s vision.

“Agro-tourism presents a unique opportunity to enhance our rural economies, empowering local communities while promoting sustainable practices in agriculture and fisheries.

“The Ministry recognises that agro-tourism is a multifaceted approach that supports the diversification of income sources for rural families, encourages the preservation of our natural resources, and fosters a deeper understanding of our agricultural practices among visitors,” read part of the statement.

The First Lady’s leadership, the Ministry noted, is inspiring stakeholders nationwide to rally around a common goal: building a vibrant, resilient rural economy rooted in Zimbabwe’s agricultural strengths.

Dr Mnangagwa’s championing of agro-tourism has become more than a policy move it is a national call to action, empowering communities and celebrating the heart of Zimbabwe’s identity.

“By connecting tourists with the realities of farming and fishing, we create a platform for education and awareness that benefits both locals and visitors alike,” reads the statement.

“In line with this initiative, the Ministry is committed to tracking and profiling agro-tourism entrepreneurs within the sector. We are dedicated to providing necessary support and resources that will enable these entrepreneurs to thrive, thereby contributing to the overall growth of our economy and the betterment of rural livelihoods.”

The Ministry also called upon all stakeholders, including local communities, businesses, and government agencies, to join the First Lady and Patron of Agric4She, Dr Mnangagwa, in the journey toward sustainable agro-tourism development.

“Together, we can harness the potential of our agricultural and natural resources to create a vibrant and sustainable future for all Zimbabweans,” reads the statement.
