Fish die-off at Lake Chivero due to contaminated water

Online Writer

AT least 1 100 fish were found dead over the weekend at Lake Chivero, prompting urgent investigations by the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks).

Preliminary reports indicate that the Marimba area has experienced significant water contamination, leading to the formation of multiple pollution bays. This contamination has resulted in a concerning rise in oxygen demand within the water body, heightening the risk of mortality for aquatic life.

As wind patterns continue to shift, authorities warn that the situation may further exacerbate the die-off of fish species in the area. In response, ZimParks is conducting a wider investigation to assess the impact on the ecosystem and identify the source of the contamination.
