FIVE companies have shown interest in constructing Muda Dam which will supply Chitungwiza Municipality with water.

The town relies on Harare for its water requirements.

The Muda Dam project has been in the pipeline for years.

Said Chitungwiza town clerk Dr George Makunde: “Two months ago the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate, and Rural Resettlement placed an advert in the press inviting tenders for the construction of a number of dams.

“Muda Dam has got five bidders and the adjudication process is in motion now,” he said.

Dr Makunde said negotiations were underway with the Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe (IDBZ) for $300 000.

“There are two stages to the financial close and the first one being the concession agreement signing which cost $300 000.

“We expect to get that funding from IDBZ but it needs collateral from council.

“The second stage will require $700 000. Right now we are waiting to get a response from IDBZ after we submitted the required things to become legible to get the loan,” he said.

Dr Makunde advised residents to be patient as council works on finding a lasting solution to water problems.

“This is major project which has high value for Government hence a lot of controlled decision making happens on such programmes. Therefore, we advise our residents to be patient.”
