Authorities have dismissed social media reports claiming over a dozen deaths, confirming that five people lost their lives and six others were injured in a road accident at Kuwadzana 7 turn-off this morning.
The bodies of the victims have been taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital mortuary for post-mortem while the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
In a statement, national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said: “The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 31st October 2024 at around 5.10 am along Harare-Bulawayo Road, Kuwadzana 7 turn off at the traffic-controlled intersection of First Street and Bulawayo Road, Harare.
“Five people were killed while six others were injured when a Toyota Hiace kombi with yet to be established number of passengers on board collided with a fuel tanker with no passengers on board. The kombi had turned right into Bulawayo Road in front of the oncoming fuel tanker.”
Comm Nyathi said the five victims had not yet been identified by their next of kin. He also confirmed the death of two other people in a road accident that occurred along Harare-Masvingo Road.
“Meanwhile, two people were killed while five others were injured when a Toyota Land Cruiser veered off the road and overturned before landing on its wheels at the 225-kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Road on October 30, 2024, at around 3.30 pm,” he said.
“The bodies of the victims were taken to Mvuma Hospital mortuary for post mortem while four of the injured victims were admitted to the same hospital. The other injured victim was referred to a hospital in Harare for further medical attention.”
