FIVE masked robbers armed with iron bars, knives, a hammer and a grinder allegedly attacked a security guard before raiding two offices at a primary school in Bulawayo.
However, the suspects were left with egg on the face when their seemingly well-planned raid yielded nothing. Not even a single red cent.
Eventually, probably as a consolation, they grabbed the security guard’s cellphone and slunk away into the darkness.
The gang had tied the guard’s hands behind his back and forced their way into the bursar’s and headmistress’ offices.
Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu said the robbery occurred on September 11 at about 1am.
The complainant, a 52-year-old man from Entumbane, was on duty as a security guard at the school when he was confronted by the five unknown suspects.
Assist Insp Ndlovu said the suspects subdued the guard at knife point.
“The accused persons grabbed the complainant while threatening him with an okapi knife, force marched him to the Bursar’s office and Headmistress’ office where they grinded burglar door and forced open the doors to gain entry,” said Asst Insp Ndlovu.
After gaining entry, the suspects tied the guard’s hands behind his back using electrical cables before ransacking the offices.
However, their search yielded no money.
Police said the robbers eventually took the guard’s cellphone before melting into the darkness.
The security guard managed to free himself at about 1;145 AM.
He proceeded to make a police report.
Asst Insp Ndlovu said police are appealing to members of the public who may have information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects, to come forward.
She commended the school authorities for not keeping cash on the premises, noting that the robbers were unable to get money despite ransacking the offices.
