Five people were killed in a road accident after the vehicle they were travelling in burst its left rear tyre and veered off the road and overturned on Sunday. The Nissan Vannet truck, which was Gokwe-bound, was carrying 13 passengers along the Kwekwe-Gokwe Road.
Police spokesperson, Chief Superintendant Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to confirm the death of five people in a road traffic accident which occurred at the 130km peg along Kwekwe-Gokwe Road near Green Diamond Hotel, Gokwe on 6 December 2015 at around 11:45 hours,” he said.
“Circumstances are that, Farai Maseko (21) was driving Nissan Vannette along Kwekwe-Gokwe Road towards Gokwe with 13 passengers on board. On approaching the 130km peg, the vehicle burst its left rear tyre. The driver lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road to the right and overturned before landing on its wheels.
“Five people died on the spot while nine others were injured and rushed to Gokwe District Hospital for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were also taken to Gokwe District Hospital for post-mortem,” Chief Sup Nyathi said.
He said the police were conducting investigations into the circumstances which led to the accident and the names of the deceased would be released once their next of kin have been advised.
