Flood kills nearly 70 in eastern Afghanistan: Official

KABUL, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — Heavy rains and flooding have claimed the lives of nearly 70 people in eastern Afghan provinces over the weekend, deputy to country’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Mohammad Aslam Sayad said Monday.
“According to our data collection, up to 69 people, including women and children, have lost their lives in flooding in nine eastern provinces over the weekend,” Sayad told Xinhua, adding 11 people were also wounded in the natural disaster.

He said the flooding hit the eastern Kabul, Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar, Nuristan, Ghazni, Wardak, Kapisa and Khost provinces.

Hundreds of houses have been washed away and hundreds of people have been left homeless, Sayad added.

The rainfall and flooding which began on Saturday and stopped on Sunday, he said, adding the most affected area is Sarobi district of Kabul where the highest casualties were reported.

The families whose houses were completely destroyed in the incident had received 15,000 afghai or 300 U.S. dollars besides receiving blankets, kitchen appliances, plastic sheet, tent, and foodstuff, Sayad said.

He also noted that inspection of the flood affected areas is going on to verify the exact number of casualties and property damage inflicted to the people.
