ZIMBABWE international Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya has made a flying start to the South African Betway Premiership football season, scoring three goals in AmaZulu’s opening two competitive matches.
The 23-year-old striker followed his match-winning contribution against Stellenbosch with a brace in Usuthu’s dramatic 4-3 extra-time defeat to Sekhukhune United in an MTN8 quarter-final at Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday.
Ngwenya opened the scoring in the 14th minute, firing a volley through the legs of Sekhukhune goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi.
With AmaZulu trailing 3-1 after the interval, the former FC Platinum forward struck again in the 56th minute, converting Mondli Mbanjwa’s cross with a diving header at the near post.
Taariq Fielies restored parity two minutes later to force the match into extra time, but substitute Vuyo Letlapa scored Sekhukhune’s winner in the 97th minute to eliminate AmaZulu.
Despite the cup exit, Ngwenya’s brace maintained an encouraging opening to the campaign after he scored the only goal in AmaZulu’s 1-0 Betway Premiership victory over Stellenbosch.
The former FC Platinum talisman converted a second-half penalty after Mosa Lebusa fouled Athini Maqokola inside the box, securing all three points for Usuthu.
Ngwenya’s strong start comes after an injury-disrupted his debut season in South Africa.
He nevertheless finished as Usuthu’s leading scorer with eight goals in 20 appearances across all competitions.
The forward scored seven league goals in 17 appearances, earning the club’s Golden Boot despite spending a significant period on the sidelines with a foot injury.
“Last season was tough because the injury slowed me down, but I am grateful to God and the coaches for believing in me,” said Ngwenya.
“The club embraced me when I was down and it is this kind of love that has really given me confidence.
“Winning the club’s Golden Boot even after spending time on the sidelines gave me confidence. Now the target is bigger.
“I want to help AmaZulu first, and if the goals come and I can challenge for the PSL Golden Boot, I will take it.”
Ngwenya said his immediate objective was to become a dependable member of Arthur Zwane’s side as he seeks to build on the promise shown during his first campaign.
“I am working hard every day because my goal is to be an expensive player, a player that my club AmaZulu can always count on, whether I come from the bench or return from injury,” he said.
