UNITED States-based Benjamin Follet-Smith finally got it right when he won the fourth event of the World Amateur Golf Championship qualifiers, the Harare Amateur Championships, at Country Club over the weekend. The event is one of the tournaments which provide points in the Eisenhower Trophy race.
Follet-Smith’s performance saw him move into second place in the World Amateur Championship race, trailing leader Badenhorst by 15 points.
The former Wingate and Royal Harare golfer beat 56 other players who took part in the fourth tourney of the qualifiers via a play-off win over Ray Badenhorst.
Follet-Smith claimed his first win of the 2014 season with impressive rounds of 71, 68, 72 and 71 for a total six-under-par 282.
Badernhorst, who is leading the qualifying race, carded 70, 72, 79 and 69. Tonderai Masunga, who went into the tourney sitting in second place, has since dropped into third place after he took 14 points having finished sixth. Midlands Amateur champion Thembelani Vundhla was third after carding 73, 74, 73 and 69.
Garry Thompson was fourth, Travis Smith fifth while Masunga, Visitor Mapwanya, Kieran Vincent, Doctor Maphosa and David Amm were all tied on sixth place.
