THE legendary former St Paul’s Musami striker Felix Mbidzo died in Murehwa on Thursday morning, coincidentally near the stadium where he made football history back in the 1960s.

He was 89.

During his heyday, Mbidzo was a deadly striker who made history with St Paul’s Musami, the first and only rural team to be crowned top flight league champions in 1966.

Nicknamed the “Davis Babes”, because the team was run by Father Antony Davis, St Paul’s Musami was also home to several stars including Jawett Nechironga and Josiah Nxumalo.

“Yes, we can confirm that Felix Mbidzo has died.

“He passed away at his home at Musami in Murehwa on Thursday morning.

“Funeral arrangements are still in the process,” a family spokesperson Kamwere Mandudu told Zimpapers Sports Hub.

The late Mbidzo is the father of the famous trio of Farai, John and Davies.

Farai won the Premier Soccer League title with CAPS United 1996 before moving to South Africa and Germany.

John is an ex-Warriors and Black Aces stalwart who also played club football in South Africa for Umtata Bush Bucks and Santos.

Davies played for 1992 PSL champions Black Aces.

Mbidzo’s other son,  Desire (widely known as the “Ball Juggler”), is a renowned Zimbabwean football entertainer and coach.

He is currently based in South Africa.
