THE Zimbabwean football family is reeling from the devastating loss of FC Platinum midfielder and former Highlanders star Brian Banda, who tragically died in a car accident yesterday afternoon.
Banda, affectionately known as “BB” or simply “Jersey Number 8” by his legion of fans, was involved in a fatal crash along the Filabusi-Bulawayo road. The accident also claimed the lives of two other passengers.
He was 29.
A midfield gem from Entumbane, Banda rose from humble beginnings playing in the Christian League to captivate the local football scene with his skill, leadership, and fierce commitment. He went on to represent Highlanders with distinction before joining FC Platinum, where he was part of their 2022 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League winning side. He also earned several caps with the national team.
His club, FC Platinum, confirmed the news in a statement that reflected the profound sense of loss:
“We are deeply saddened to share the news of Brian Banda’s passing, which occurred today, June 29, 2025, in a car accident on the Zvishavane-Bulawayo Road. Tragically, he lost his life at the scene, and FC Platinum has suffered the loss of a remarkable player.
Go well Brian Banda. FC Platinum has lost not only a talented athlete but also a beloved teammate and friend. Brian’s dedication to the sport and his infectious enthusiasm both on and off the field left an indelible mark on all who knew him.”
The club also called for privacy for Banda’s family during this painful time and remembered the midfielder for the joy and passion he brought to the game.
Highlanders, where Banda first made his name in top flight football, also paid tribute:
“Highlanders Football Club is deeply saddened by the untimely passing on of Brian Banda, FC Platinum midfielder and former Highlanders player.
Brian was a gifted midfielder who proudly wore the black and white jersey before continuing his professional journey with FC Platinum.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and the entire football fraternity during this time of profound loss.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
FC Platinum chairman Dumisani Sisale said the football community had been robbed of one of its most loyal professionals.
“We are saddened as FC Platinum to lose him. He died around lunchtime today while on his way to Bulawayo.”
Veteran coach Fortune Ncube, who spotted Banda while he played in a church league in Entumbane, said his former protege’s death was painful.
“We had achieved so much together, and it is sad to see him depart in that painful way. I was happy to have seen and identified him from the Christian League and got him to play professional football.”
Banda grew up alongside Chicken Inn’s George Majika and Arthur Chinda in Entumbane. Those who followed his career remember him not just for his creativity and discipline on the pitch, but also for the humility and grace he carried off it.
He leaves behind a legacy of excellence, a void in Zimbabwean football, and a generation of fans who will forever chant his name.
