WHILE there are a number of former male footballers who have ventured into the fitness industry, very few females have chosen that path after their playing days.
Former Dynamos star David Kutayuripo and ex CAPS United defender Charles Manjera are some of the high profile football personalities who are now into fitness training.
But, there is one former women football star who has ventured into the fast rising industry.
Charlene Moyo, who turned out for renowned teams like New Orleans and Inline Academy, before retiring at the age of 24, is one of the few ladies thriving in the fitness industry.
She is known in fitness circles as “Coach Charlene.”
She developed an affinity for the gym during the Covid-19 induced lockdown in 2019.
“I started exercising at home with my family after we started appreciating the importance of staying healthy.
“I then started working at a gym in Bulawayo but as a lady it wasn’t easy to grow in an industry that is dominated by males,” reveals Moyo.
She now has a fully-fledged fitness entity and Moyo intends to use fitness to fight against drug abuse and prostitution.
Moyo will host a month-long fitness campaign known as “Squat Goals” at Zim Hall in Highfield from January 15 to February 15.
“We are trying to make fitness a big industry in Zimbabwe and we thank God it’s really moving fast.
“The upcoming event in Highfield is for all.
“As the Squat Goals team we are saying no to drug abuse, let’s stay healthy and let’s reduce crime in our communities because we want to create a powerful generation,” said Moyo.
“My motive is to encourage women to take up fitness as a lifestyle. Together we can also use fitness to fight against social vices like child abuse and gender based violence,” she added.
