Football’s most generous benefactor, Lewis Muzhara, leaves enduring legacy

Online Reporter

Lewis Muzhara is a Zimbabwean treasure, an innovator whose business, philanthropy and volunteer work has benefited local football for over a decade. This self-made “man’s man” never forgot the sport in which his own career was cut short by a knee injury early on.

Muzhara is still fairly young, but his legacy will endure far longer.

“Throughout all these years, Lewis’ continued support of football especially women’s football, has very significant,” said a former football administrator who asked not to be named for personal reasons.

“At our times of greatest need, that’s when Lewis would be the most generous. He would always step forward and say, ‘Tell me what you need, and I’ll do the best I can.’ “

That he has done, and then some. Moreover, Lewis’ generosity extended far beyond annual giving.

The Harare-based philanthropist, who has provided women’s football with financial and material backing for over 15 years, has also committed to future investment in the local game after he penned a two-year partnership agreement with the Northern Region Soccer League.

Muzhara told B Metro: “Football is at the heart of communities across Zimbabwe.

“In spite of the state of our economy, I realised what a significant loss it would be for clubs and players across the league if they continued to be ignored by the corporate world.

“I’ve seen first-hand over the last few years what a difference clubs can make to people’s lives, and so I am very pleased to have been able to offer my support at this difficult time. I’m also committing my ongoing support to Zimbabwean football.”

In the increasingly globalised age in which we live, people from every corner of the world can all follow their favourite international sports and athletes. Corporate support for football can only help to raise local players to the role of international superstars.

Muzhara enjoys relative wealth, but he is unique in the degree to which he shares this wealth with others who are less fortunate. Muzhara is a role model businessman who makes the betterment of his country a priority.

He is considered as a “modest, hard-working businessman” But where is he from? And, from where does he get this humility that so many fans have remarked on?

Who is Lewis Muzhara?

The answer lies on Ingwe Farm some 5km from Mufakose where he grew up with the likes of former Miss Malaika,  Briita Masalethulini, a sister and friend. Being from a peri-urban area, Muzhara chose to play club football at an early age. He would forgo much of his play time so he could leave train.

But Muzhara was born to a family of average means, but it’s likely that in his life he was a witness to poverty.
